Sarri: I cannot give Morata confidence

Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri says only goals, and not him, will give striker Alvaro Morata confidence.

The 25-year-old Spanish marksman came under heavy scrutiny following Chelsea’s Europa League opener against Greek outfit PAOK.

Sarri’s men ran out 1-0 winners in Athens, but the scoreline could have been greater with Morata missing some gilt-edged chances.

Feeling sorry for him, the Italian tactician stresses he alone cannot lift the dark clouds over Morata.

“Alvaro has to gain confidence with one, two three goals. I am not able to give him confidence,” he told reporters after the game (via FourFourTwo).

“In this match he had three or four opportunities. He was unlucky.

“I hope for him in the future I can help him. But the confidence can come with goals.

“Maybe two goals in two matches, I don’t know. For the first time in this season he was ready in the box. He was on the ball and was active.”

Morata at Chelsea

The native of Madrid has, to date, featured across 54 matches for Chelsea in all competitions, registering 16 goals and creating a further six for his teammates.

In the Premier League last season, he managed 11 goals across 31 outings (0.35 per game or a goal every 187.7 minutes).

He finished as the Blues’ second-top scorer in the league behind the mercurial Eden Hazard who bagged 12, meaning both were the only players under Antonio Conte who reached double figures in the league.

So far this season he’s registered one goal in four league outings.
