Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri has confirmed that he found out about the news of his Napoli sacking on the television.
The 59-year-old took over from fellow Italian Antonio Conte at Stamford Bridge this summer, bringing an end to a three-year stint with Napoli.
Despite not winning a trophy with the Partenopei, two second-place finishes and a third-place finish – along with 97 wins from 147 games – ensured that his time in Naples was viewed as a success.
However, Sarri has now revealed the unfortunate nature of his departure from the club, telling Il Mattino newspaper (via the Daily Mail): “It’s true, I found out that I wasn’t the Napoli coach anymore by seeing it on television.
“I had some doubts, that’s fair, but there was a clause in the contract and it wasn’t something I had asked for. It was not respected in the timing. Now I hope that Ancelotti can achieve what I came so close to.”
Since leaving Napoli, Sarri has been widely and publicly criticised by club president Aurelio De Laurentiis.
However, the Italian doesn’t hold any grudges and actually claims he is ‘grateful’ to De Laurentiis, adding: “He gave me the opportunity to be coach of Napoli.”
Since replacing Sarri, new Napoli boss Carlo Ancelotti has had an indifferent start at his new club, taking six points from his first three games and going down 3-0 to Sampdoria in their last match.
Sarri has fared much better at Chelsea, winning his first four league games in charge.
Chelsea host Cardiff City on September 15 in their first game back from the international break.
