New Arsenal signing Lucas Torreira could be the player to turn the Gunners into a more successful side like Manchester City, according to former club centre-back Martin Keown.
Torreira joined the club this summer from Serie A side Sampdoria for a transfer fee of £26.4 million after the midfielder had a solid World Cup in Russia playing for Uruguay.
The 22-year-old has had limited playing time for the Gunners at the start of this Premier League campaign, making a few brief substitute appearances.
But Torreira did get his first assist in Arsenal’s 3-2 victory away to Cardiff City, and supporters have been calling for Unai Emery to start the talented midfielder from the off.
Former Arsenal defender Keown has been one of those who believes that Torreira could be an important player for the north London club, not just this season, but beyond.
Keown believes a player of Torreira’s quality could help Arsenal transform their shape and play football more reminiscent of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City side.
“Emery has very creative players who play further up the pitch but he needs a figure who can sit in deep midfield,” the former Gunners defender wrote in his column for the Daily Mail.
“Lucas Torreira could be that man and he could then help the back two out.
“It can sometimes feel like we’re watching a youth team whose players are trying to be developed into passers.
“Manchester City play 4-1-2-3, with a deep midfielder and two creative players either side. That may be the way for Emery to go.”
Arsenal’s next Premier League fixture is against Newcastle United at St James’ Park on September 15.
