West Ham United manager Manuel Pellegrini has revealed that he is “confident” his side can still have a positive campaign despite starting the season with four consecutive defeats.
The Hammers picked up their first points of the campaign after beating Everton 3-1 on Sunday, thanks to a brace from newcomer Andriy Yarmolenko and a second-half strike from star forward Marko Arnautovic.
Victory will go a long way to alleviating frustrations in east London after the club lost their opening four matches, and Pellegrini now believes the club can still achieve their objectives this season after the poor start.
Speaking to the club’s official website before the Everton match, he said: “I don’t think that because you lose four games you must not be confident. It’s the opposite and, in this moment, I trust what I do more than ever, because it is not the first time I have done this same work and it’s not the first time in my career we have had some bad results.
“All the clubs I have managed have had some bad results at one moment in the season. It’s not good to start with some bad results, but we are absolutely confident that we’re going to reverse it.
“I am not worried about the statistics. I am worried about finding the right team to play well and to win the game.”
The Chilean tactician was celebrating his 65th birthday at Goodison Park, and his players certainly provided him with the ultimate present after clinching three vital points, taking the Hammers off the foot of the table and out of the relegation zone.
West Ham looked shellshocked when Gylfi Sigurdsson fired home a bullet header just on the stroke of half-time, bringing the score to 2-1, as they have dropped the most points this season when being the first team to score – six, against both Arsenal and Bournemouth.
However, Pellegrini’s men held firm and scored in the second half to the much-relieved travelling West Ham supporters.
Next up for the Hammers is unbeaten league leaders Chelsea on Sunday.
