Sarri would welcome Terry arrival on coaching staff

Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri has opened the door on a possible coaching role for John Terry at the club.

Terry, 37, called time on his illustrious playing career in west London last year, parting company with the Blues for Championship club Aston Villa, where he captained the club to a fourth-placed finish last term.

However, his time at Villa Park lasted just one season, and the former England international is now considering his next career step after reportedly turning down a move to Russian outfit Spartak Moscow last week.

The free agent has been training at Chelsea’s training complex in Cobham to keep his fitness levels up, while he is also working on his UEFA A license – the mandatory coaching license required by UEFA to become a professional football coach.

Speaking about the possibility of recruiting Terry as part of his coaching staff (via The Guardian), Sarri said: “Yes, of course, but the last time I spoke with him, a week ago, he told me he wants to play for another season.

“But I don’t know the situation now. Chelsea is his home, of course. For sure, he would be a point of reference for me. For everybody here, I think. His presence alone [would be]. This is John Terry’s home.

“It’s up to him. I am very open with him because he is the history of the club. He has won everything with the club, so it’s up to him. But I don’t know [if it is possible]. He told me a lot of things, that he wants to play, so I’d have to speak to him again.”

The most successful captain in the club’s history, Terry joined Chelsea at just 14 after leaving West Ham’s esteemed academy, and went on to make over 700 appearances across all competitions for the Blues while also clinching 26 pieces of silverware.

Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce is reportedly still interested in resigning the Barking-born defender after he helped guide the club to the play-off finals last term, though the financial implications of such a move are a major deterrent for the club.

Up next for Sarri’s men is the opening match of the Europa League group games against PAOK on Thursday evening.
