Mourinho confirms Dalot will not feature against Wolves

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed Diogo Dalot will not play in the club’s game against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.

Dalot joined United from Porto in the summer but, before he could make his debut for the Red Devils, suffered a knee injury in pre-season.

The Portuguese full-back finally got his first appearance for the senior side as United beat BSC Young Boys in the Champions League on Wednesday.

But despite that, Mourinho has revealed Dalot will be weaned into the United starting XI, being saved until their Carabao Cup game against Derby County next week.

“I want him in this process of adaptation,” he told reporters (via the club’s official website).

“I want him to play totally fresh, so he’s not playing [against Wolves]. He plays again on Tuesday.

“To play for Manchester United is difficult enough for a kid who is 19 years old, coming from another country and after an important injury and surgery. He doesn’t need to face more difficulties because of an accumulation of matches.

“So he played 90 minutes in the Champions League on a difficult pitch, recovered totally and on Tuesday he plays again.

“But I think he showed to those who didn’t know him very well that he’s not a player to be here just for rotation; he’s a player to be here for competition, for positions. He’s a very good player.”

The win against Young Boys continued United’s return to form with their third win in a row across all competitions, having lost two of their opening three matches.

United will be hoping to make it four in a row at Old Trafford on Saturday when they welcome Wolves to Old Trafford, a side to currently sitting one point behind the Red Devils in the Premier League.

Dalot’s United debut

Though coming against a team United would have expected to beat, Dalot’s first outing for the Red Devils could not have gone better for the teenager.

Dalot completed both of his take-on attempts and made six clearances in 90 minutes on the pitch, helping to keep a clean sheet in Switzerland.
