Mesut Ozil has named Zinedine Zidane, Cristiano Ronaldo and Thierry Henry among his Arsenal and Real Madrid five-a-side dream teams.
The 29-year-old German international made 159 appearances for Real Madrid before joining the Gunners in 2013, with whom he has now played 199 times in all competitions.
Despite winning a multitude of honours at both clubs, Ozil resisted the temptation to include himself in either team, while Sergio Ramos was the only player included that still played for either club.
His Arsenal side was full of Premier League winning talent, most of which were from their 2003/04 invincible season.
“For Arsenal, it would be Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp, Robert Pires, [Freddie] Ljungberg and the goalkeeper would be David Seaman. That’s my legendary team for Arsenal,” Ozil told Arsenal Player.
During his time at the Bernabeu, Ozil had the pleasure of sharing the pitch with some of the club’s best players of all time, while being well aware of the talent that had preceded him.
When naming his Madrid dream team, he added: “I think Zidane of course, Cristiano Ronaldo, [Sergio] Ramos, Raul… that’s already four or five. And obviously [Iker] Casillas.
“Those players are legends and played a lot of games for the club, and won everything with the club.
“I could also say Roberto Carlos, Guti or Ronaldo, the Brazilian one, but I didn’t play with them. They’ve had really, really good players in the past.”
The German was talking ahead of Arsenal’s Legends charity match against Real Madrid Legends at the Emirates on Saturday, which the Gunners eventually won 5-3 on penalties.
Ozil has been enjoying a rest over this international break, having announced his acrimonious retirement from the German national side last month following a falling out with the German football association during the World Cup.
Arsenal are back in Premier League action on Saturday when they travel to St James’ Park to face Newcastle United, and will be looking to win their third game of the season.
