Saul Niguez has played down his importance for Spain under Luis Enrique.
The 23-year-old Atletico Madrid midfielder scored the first goal of Enrique’s tenure in La Roja’s 2-1 win over England at Wembley on Saturday.
It subsequently led to reports suggesting Saul will become a cornerstone of a new-look Spain, but the Elche-born footballer doesn’t see it that way, feeling their future successes isn’t dependent on him.
“I’m not fundamental for the national team, but I feel important at Atletico,” he told reporters (via Marca).
“Everything I do is for the good of the team. The national team does not depend on me.”
Better call Saul
A firm fan favourite of the Atleti faithful, Saul is contracted in the Spanish capital until June 2026 and has been earmarked as a future captain.
Since breaking through he’s registered 29 goals across 208 matches for his boyhood club with many of those strikes proving to be pivotal including against Bayern Munich in the 2016 Champions League semi-final.
At international level Saul debuted against Belgium in September 2016 before collecting a further 10 caps with his first goal coming in his latest appearance.
His equaliser against England in their UEFA Nations League meeting, two minutes after Marcus Rashford had put the hosts in front, was the springboard to Spain’s first win at the home of English football since 1981.
