Spurs star Son to avoid military service as South Korea win Asian Games

Son-Heung min finally learnt his military service fate on Saturday after helping South Korea to beat Japan 2-1 in the Asian Games final.

After a goalless 90 minutes, Lee Seung-woo and Hwang Hee-chan netted in extra time to give Son’s side a memorable victory and end fears of a 21-month military service period for the Spurs forward.

A podium finish at the Olympic games and a gold medal in the Asian Games is the only way in which South Korea’s players can become exempt from the service.

Son was substituted in the final minutes of extra-time and has relief showed at the final whistle as he burst into tears and ran onto the pitch.

If South Korea had not have won the final, the 26-year-old would have been expected to complete a two-year mandatory military service.

The Spurs forward told post-match reporters: “Tottenham have supported me so much and that means a lot to me. I really want to say thank you to the coach and the fans of Spurs. They are so special.”

How the football world reacted

In Son’s absence, Spurs have won three games out of three.

They next face Watford in the Premier League on Sunday at Vicarage Road.
